Event Details

The Scottish Open Source Awards events brings together some of Scotland's finest technologists and technology leaders to celebrate the achievements of the community of individuals and companies that contribute to the global strength of Open Source software.

The awards event is on Friday November 20th at the new and prestigious Forum Building at Edinburgh University Informatics. Tickets are free!!

The running order for the evening is:

18:30 - 19:15 Registration, drinks, food and networking
19:15 - 19:45 Keynote speech, Awards announcement and presentations
19:45 - 21:00 Drinks and networking

 

As with all good events, once the formal awards have finished, there's plenty of opportunity to repair to local hostelries to continue networking.

We're delighted to announce that Ian Ritchie is to be the keynote speaker at the Awards Event. Known to many in the technology community, Ian is Chairman of iomart plc., Computer Application Services Ltd., Scapa Technologies Ltd. the Interactive Design Institute, and Caspian Learning Ltd. He is a non-executive Director of the Edinburgh International Film Festival.

He is a also a trustee of the National Museums of Scotland, a member of the board of Our Dynamic Earth, the leading Edinburgh science-based visitor attraction, and of Bletchley Park, the centre of wartime codebreaking and the birthplace of modern electronic computation. He is Chairman of Generation Science and a board member of the Edinburgh International Science Festival. He was a founding director, and Chairman (1988-1990), of the Scottish Software Federation.

On top of all that he is a funny, erudite and inspirational speaker.

Thanks to the generosity of SICSA, we can now announce a Scottish Student Open Source Award.

The Scottish Open Source Awards 2009 announces The SICSA Scottish Open Source Award for Students. With a cash prize of £500, the Open Source Awards is inviting nominations from students in all universities and colleges in Scotland. To qualify, students should be able to demonstrate one of the following:

* Innovative use of Open Source Software either in an academic or commercial context
* Ownership of an Open Source project
* Innovative contributions to an existing Open Source project
* Exemplary advocacy of Open Source software

Judging will take place on Friday, November 6th.  The last date for submissions is Friday 30th October.
